Untermyer Gardens was built by Samuel Untermyer in 1917 and was called "America's Most Spectacular Garden" in the 1920's. Owned by the City of Yonkers and located on the Hudson River on 43 acres, it is undergoing an extensive restoration by the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy. The Walled Garden is the finest Persian Garden in the Western Hemisphere. The Temple of Love, with its five waterfalls, is breathtaking. The Vista is the most monumental feature of the garden, terminated by two ancient Roman columns, 2000 years old. Come see magnificent architecture, staggering views and sophisticated horticulture.
Tours are 90 minutes and cost $10 per person, kids 12 and under are free. Meet behind the Community Center, bring water and wear sturdy closed toe shoes. The weekly tours alternate between history focused and horticulture focused, but both are appropriate for all audiences. Once a month there is a President's tour, which costs $20. Please refer to the website untermyergardens.org for specific dates. July 2 history focused, July 9 President's tour, July 16 history focused, July 23 horticulture focused, July 30 history focused.
The garden is also a great place to bring a picnic lunch for after your tour.
