Untermyer Park and Gardens is located in Yonkers with breathtaking views of the Hudson River and Palisades. It was world famous in the early 20th century and was known as "America's Most Spectacular Garden" under the ownership of Samuel Untermyer. William Welles Bosworth, the architect who designed Kykuit for John D. Rockefeller designed an elaborate series of garden spaces up, down and across the hillside, drawing on artistic, cultural, mythological and religious traditions from ancient times forward, with dramatic and colorful plantings and both ancient and contemporary architecture and statuary. After Mr. Untermyer's death in 1940 the gardens entered a long period of decline and ruin. The gardens are now undergoing a dramatic restoration and renaissance. They include the largest Persian garden in the Western Hemisphere, representing the Garden of Eden and tying together the cultures of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, a long tree-lined Vista down to the Hudson, and The Temple of Love: a huge rock folly with dramatic waterfalls cascading down the hill. Restoration of numerous other garden features is in the works. This is a wonderful place to spend a day. Admission is free and there is free on site and street parking. The garden can also be reached easily from NYC via Metro North or by subway plus Bee Line bus. It is a destination worth repeated visits: the gardens change from season to season and the development taking place from one year to the next as the restoration evolves and matures is exciting to witness.
